Ficlet: A Word In Edgewise by PennyC

 PennyC's battle with her muse

A WORD IN EDGEWISE

by PennyC

She opened her eyes to the sound of the baby crying. As she lay there,
she
groaned at the realisation the alarm hadn't gone off yet. As if on cue,
off it
went.

She got up and got the baby changed while her husband slept on. She
padded into
the living room and made breakfast for the both of them. As they ate,
her mind
drifted to Hogwarts and te many images that flowed through her mind.

*..the battle...an unexpected turn of events.... falling as hit from
behind with
a curse... his son embracing him....*

The baby was getting sleepy, so she put her to bed. She took a shower
while the
house was quiet, struggling to plan her day.

"MOM! WHERE ARE MY SHOES??"

It was her twelve-year-old nomad, the one with  no volume control. She
heaved a
weary sigh -- had she only been up half an hour? -- and headed to help
her find
her shoes.

After the nomad was off for the morning mail run, her husband made an
appearance. He grunted something about coffee and headed into the
shower.

She sighed as she put the pot on. It was going to be another one of
those days.
Her mind drifted again, the images coming, trying to get a word in
edgewise
around everything else.

*...his son embracing him.... smiling at him.... drawing his wand....
the son's
expression as he saw which way the wand was--*

And the baby woke up crying. Once more, a change and a meal were
delivered. As
the girl began to crawl with the juice bottle, she tackled the day's
chores,
trying to make a dent in the list that just grew longer with each
passing
hour.

Her husband did his work for the day, and then prepared lunch while she
entertained the baby. Right when it was ready, the baby delivered a
'present'
that had to be taken care of, so they ended up eating in shifts.

When the baby was taken care of, she ate and tackled the dishes. As she
went
about the monotonous task, she allowed her mind to drift again.

*...the son's expression as he saw which way the wand was pointed.... a
final
smile.... "AVADA KE--"*

"MOM! WHAT'S FOR LUNCH?"

Heaving a sigh, she pulled out leftovers for the nomad. And friend. And
friend.
Lovely.

Once the nomadic tribe left, the baby was knuckling her eyes. So she
was gently
put into the crib and tucked in with her special blankie. The husband
got ready
for work and left with a gentle kiss and a few last-minute additions to
the
chores list.

Lovely.

She had a few hours before it was time for writing, so she tackled more
chores
and let her mind wander while she did.

*...a final smile..."AVADA KEVADRA".....and a sentence. 'The flash of
green
light was the last thing Draco saw'.*

She smiled. Perfect. Now to find the time to WRITE the thing and hope
the QO
gals didn't organise a lynching party after--

"MOM! WHAT'S FOR SUPPER?"

Lovely. The shout woke the baby. A snack, and it was playtime.

Feeding and bathing and changing the baby one last time, she put her to
bed with
their usual routine at the usual time. Just in time for the nomad to
show up
with her tribe.

Lovely.

She finally sent the tribesmen home, got the nomad fed, read, and sent
upstairs
with a small list of chores to do before bedtime in an hour. Reminded
her that
if she'd do them instead of shouting about it, it would be done
quicker.
Pouting insults, the nomad departed for the night to the slamming of a
door.

She leaned against the staircase and sighed. Lovely. Just what she did
NOT
need.

A talking-to with the nomad later, she was downstairs doing the final
chores of
the night. Counting down the moments till ten, when she could visit
Hogwarts
for real.

Ten! FINALLY! She sat down and arranged herself. She hit the button to
start the
computer.

Nothing happened.

She burst into tears.
